Sardinia with Kids: A Stress-Free Family Holiday Guide

Shallow beaches, short transfers and apartments with a pool: how to plan a Sardinian week that actually relaxes the grown-ups too.

A great family holiday is really about logistics. We share the beaches, residences and small decisions that keep little ones happy and parents calm.

Beaches built for small children

Sardinia is quietly brilliant for young families because so many of its beaches shelve gently into calm, clear shallows. In the south, the dune-backed bays around Chia let little ones paddle a long way out in barely knee-deep water, while the north-west's Stintino coast offers the same warm, wadeable conditions. Costa Rei in the south-east is another soft-sand, easy-water favourite.

Look for sheltered, west- or south-facing bays where the water stays flat, and favour beaches with a bar or shade nearby for the inevitable snack and cool-down. Bringing a beach tent or umbrella makes the hot midday hours far easier with toddlers.

Keep transfers short

Tired children and long drives do not mix, so base yourself near the beaches you most want to visit rather than planning to crisscross the island. Sardinia is large, and what looks close on a map can be a winding hour by car. Choosing one good area and exploring it slowly beats chasing every famous cove.

Flying into the airport nearest your base keeps the first and last days calm. The south around Cagliari and the north-west near Alghero both make for gentle arrivals with beaches close at hand.

Why self-catering and a pool help

A self-catering apartment takes the pressure off family meals, letting you handle fussy eaters, early breakfasts and late naps on your own schedule. A kitchen and a fridge of cold drinks and fruit quietly solve half the daily logistics of a holiday with children.

A pool is the secret weapon on days when the beach feels like too much effort. Toddlers can splash safely in sight of a shaded lounger, older children burn off energy before dinner, and you avoid a drive entirely. Our self-catering apartments with a pool are popular with families for exactly this reason.

Practical tips for a smooth trip

Pack reef shoes, as some lovely coves are pebbly underfoot, and never underestimate the sun: high-factor cream, hats and a midday break in the shade are essential from late spring onward. Carry plenty of water, since the quieter beaches often have no shops.

Plan beach days for the morning and the cooler late afternoon, and let the hot middle of the day be for lunch, a siesta or the pool. Sardinians eat late, so an early kitchen supper at the apartment on busy days keeps everyone happier.

When to go with children

June and September are ideal for families: the sea is warm, the days are long and hot, and the crowds and prices ease off either side of the August peak. School holidays push you into July and August, when everything is busier and beaches fill early, so arrive in good time for parking and shade.

Whenever you come, build the day around the heat rather than fighting it. An early start, a long lunch and a late swim is the gentlest rhythm for small travellers.
